Frequently Asked Questions
COMMON QUESTIONS WHEN CONSIDERING SOUL CITY Band For Your Wedding:
+ How can we see Soul City live?
Soul City regularly plays public shows in and around the Boston area, including venues and public parks. You can find announcements for new shows on our website, Instagram, and Facebook to find out where the band plays next! We also keep our social media up to date with loads of live footage from real events and all our videos are filmed live and without the use of tracks or prerecorded material. What you see and hear is what you get!
+ Are you a collective?
No, we are a real band! Soul City was founded in 1988 and has played thousands of events over the last 30+ years. We use the same singers, horn players, and musicians for every single event. Many of our members have been in the band for 10+ years. This makes our sound and chemistry extremely consistent and tight. This is a wedding band that genuinely loves working together and that comes across in every performance.
+ Do you offer smaller versions of your band?
The answer is yes and no. Our 10-piece Boston wedding band is what we are known for- a BIG band with a BIG sound. We aim to keep all 10 core musicians working full time for Soul City. This means they hold every Saturday in their calendar exclusively for our company. In order for us to be able to keep them full time, we book only the full band for Saturday events. However, we do offer smaller versions of the band for any non-Saturday dates.
+ Is a 10-piece band too big for my wedding?
No way! We perform at smaller events with less than 50 guests often. While a bigger band means more bodies in the performance area, we do not take up any more room than a 7 or 8-piece band because of how we arrange ourselves in a space. We are also experts at mitigating sound concerns and hire audio technicians who are highly skilled at running sound in any type of space. We always work with our clients and venues to make sure sound levels remain appropriate throughout the entire event.
+ What does a “standard” wedding timeline look like?
We follow the industry standard of a four hour reception, which includes dinner and dancing, and begins immediately after the conclusion of the cocktail hour or when guests enter the reception space. For additional services like ceremony and cocktail hour, we follow the industry standard of a one-hour ceremony (30 mins of prelude music followed by processionals and recessionals) and a one-hour cocktail hour.
+ How many breaks will the band take and will there be music during the breaks?
The band will break once for dinner, usually after all your guests have been served their entrees. This is a short break as we want to get to dancing! Depending on the flow of the evening, the band may take one more short break in between dance sets, but we never want to disrupt a full dance floor and may decide to forgo the break. After all, we’re there to keep people dancing the whole night! We always supply music during breaks, and these songs can be chosen by you or the band.
+ Do we get a say in what is played during the reception?
Absolutely! We want to play as much of the music you love and envision yourself dancing to at your wedding. Our wedding band will work with you closely in the months leading up to the wedding to create a playlist that not only ensures your guests will dance the night away but is also stacked with your requests. That being said, if there is music or artists you definitely don’t want to hear, we will not play those specific songs/artists. Keep in mind, giving our wedding band some room to flex our muscles and play what we play best is always appreciated! Allow our experience to work for you.
+ We want to book Soul City — what’s next?!
Dates move quickly and we only have one band, so securing the band quickly is always your best option. If you intend to book our wedding band, fill out our contact form indicating which date you would like to “hold.” From there, you will be sent information needed for the contract, and will have seven days to sign and return the contract, along with the non-refundable retainer of 50% of the total contract price.
